About

Entrepreneurs, economists, and urbanist thinkers join forces to discuss the actions, effects, and impacts of Startup methodology for cities.

Join the conversation!

Cities everywhere are turning to smart technology to solve their most pressing issues of transport, education and housing. What will the impact of these technologies be on social cohesion and the environment? One emerging technology for cities is Smart Agriculture which includes vertical farming, smart greenhouses and IOT-empowered open field agriculture. These technologies, along with a growing movement of young farmers across the globe, have the potential to transform the food system that cities and people depend upon. Startup Cities is proud to bring together entrepreneurs working on these issues for a panel discussion followed by networking. Drinks provided.

Bowery is the modern farming company growing the purest produce imaginable. We are on a mission to grow food for a better future by revolutionizing agriculture. By combining the benefits of the best local farms with advances made possible by technology, our indoor farms create the ideal conditions to grow post-organic produce you can feel good about eating. BoweryOS, our proprietary software system, uses vision systems, automation technology, and machine learning to monitor plants and all the variables that drive their growth 24/7. Because we control the entire process from seed to store, Bowery farms use zero pesticides, 95% less water, and are 100+ times more productive on the same footprint of land than traditional agriculture.

Smallhold is a Brooklyn-based farming technology company that provides the world’s first automated, modular remotely-managed and subscription-based growing system to restaurants and retailers. Using Smallhold controlled-environment growing systems, businesses can generate consistent and meaningful amounts of local produce tailored to their individual business/menu needs independent of climatic changes or outside market pressures. Smallhold also operates NYC’s only mushroom farm and only certified organic farm. Smallhold systems can be found growing produce on-site at Whole Foods, Mission Chinese, and restaurants in and throughout NYC.

Agritecture Consulting provides advisory services in the design, planning, implementation and operation of urban agriculture projects. We offer our clients the tools, data, ideas, network and expertise needed to ensure their success. We consult globally and are based in Brooklyn, NYC. Agritecture’s expertise is in controlled environment agriculture, a rapidly developing technology and industry that is rapidly gaining traction and predicted to be valued at $9 billion. Our project experience includes hydroponic greenhouses, vertical farms, and sustainability learning labs. In 2018, Agritecture launched it's Urban Agriculture Scenario Analysis service for cities and large corporations conducting long-term local food system planning.

Adam Hengels is Founder of The Center for Market Urbanism and co-founder of Parafin. Adam is passionate about economics and cities.  The ideas at marketurbanism.com have been instrumental in demonstrating the urgency of liberalizing land use policy to make cities more vibrant, inclusive, and affordable.  In the face of an urban housing supply crisis, thinkers across the political spectrum have come to accept the Market Urbanist case for liberalization made over the past decade.  Through The Center for Market Urbanism non-profit and his entrepreneurial endeavors, Adam’s mission is to improve the urban experience, and overcome obstacles that prevent aspiring city dwellers from enjoying the way-of-life they desire.
